Drama at African Clubs Championship

Drama struck at the Africa Club Championships as two of Kenya’s three representatives look to have been shown the door over player issues. Following the signing of several of their players to clubs in the United Arab Emirates, the Confederation of African Volleyball moved to have Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Prisons forfeit their quarterfinals matches on the grounds that they no longer had enough players to reach the minimum requirement of 10 needed to participate at thye competition in Nairobi.

With Kenyan officials crying foul at the decision made by Ugandan Control Committee President, Tom Omongole it certainly thrown the whole tournament into chaos given the two clubs involved would have been amongst the favourites to win the whole thing.

The players said to have signed for teams in Dubai were listed by the east African Standard as Jane Wacu and Esther Mwombe for Prisons, Lucy Chege, Janet Wanja and Asha Makuto from Pipeline. The club tournament, normally dominated by teams from Kenya, Tunisia and Egypt , with a place at the World Club championship at stake for the winners.

Kenya’s other representatives in the competition, Kenya Commercial Bank, were unaffected by the ruling and will proceed with their quarterfinals.
