With World cup Glory for the next four years now decided its time to focus attention back to the Kenya Premier League. The first round of the second leg of matches was played over the last weekend, with the big fixture being the duel at City Stadium between defending Champions Sofapaka and 2007 edition winners, and current league leaders Tusker FC. The match ended in a 1-1 stalemate (Tusker super sub Paul Were salvaging a draw after Sofapaka went ahead though Bobby Mugalia)
Elsewhere in the league, 3rd placed Mathare United missed an opportunity to make in headway in closing the x point gap between them and Tusker FC. They were held to a 0-0 draw by Naivasha’s Karuturi Sports. Gor Mahia was the biggest winners, pounding Chemelil Sugar 4-1 whilst in the relegation battle. Red Berets and Thika United picked up valuable 1-0 wins over SoNy Sugar and Mahakama respectively. As a result of the weekend fixtures, Tusker’s lead at the top of the log is now subject to second placed Ulinzi Stars failing to win their game in hand on the weekend, at the bottom end of the table, Mahakama’s loss to relegation rivals Thika United, leaves them 7 points adrift at the bottom of the table. Red Beret’s win takes them out of the relegation places at the expense of Sony Sugar on goal difference.
